We are delighted to offer a magnificent pair of Horton 12-bore sidelock ejectors made in 1908 – the very epitome of Birmingham gunmaking heritage. These best-quality, assisted-opening sidelocks exhibit all the classic hallmarks that distinguish Horton craftsmanship: elegant fluted fences, the once-patented Polygrip top-lever, crisp adjustable trigger pulls and the robust security of a hidden third bite. Even after more than a century, the quality of these guns is immediately apparent; sympathetically restored, they will make a superb and highly desirable pair for the next fortunate custodian.

Beyond their mechanical excellence, these guns possess exceptional provenance and character – qualities increasingly prized by discerning collectors and sportsmen. They were originally presented as a gift to the family of their current owner by his uncle, Lieutenant Arthur Alexander Pitcairn, an officer of the renowned Black Watch Regiment. Lieutenant Pitcairn served with distinction in the Second World War, including action during the ferocious Battle for Crete.

The Pitcairn family’s military lineage is nothing short of remarkable. Arthur Alexander Pitcairn’s grandfather was Thomas Pitcairn, son of Major John Pitcairn of the Royal Marines, famed for his service during the American War of Independence. Major Pitcairn commanded British troops at the Battle of Lexington and met a heroic end at the Battle of Bunker Hill on 17th June 1775, during the siege of Boston. His death — as he was cradled by his son Thomas — is immortalised in John Trumbull’s celebrated painting of the battle, a poignant testament to sacrifice and valour.

This confluence of fine British gunmaking and distinguished family history makes these Horton sidelocks far more than mere sporting arms; they are artefacts of living heritage. Guns of this calibre, with such provenance, are rarely encountered on the open market. They exemplify the enduring appeal of traditional British craftsmanship — a world apart from the soulless uniformity of mass-produced modern shotguns.

Whether viewed as an investment, a fine addition to a driven-game battery, or a collector’s heirloom, this pair of Horton sidelock ejectors represents an opportunity to own a tangible piece of sporting and military history.
